Interview with Kimberly Sabatini, author of Touching The Surface

Kimberly Sabatini, author of Touching the Surface, has kindly accepted my interview! You can find out more about her book and her interests by reading the answers below!
I want to thank her for being really kind and answering all of my questions and also for sending me some swag items, some of which will be part of a GIVEAWAY in the next weeks!

1. SC: Hi Kimberly! Thank you for accepting this interview! Mind sharing with your readers something about yourself?

Kim: Since you're in Romania--I should share that I'm a "little bit" international. I lived in Augsburg, Germany for four years and did lots of wonderful trips while I was there. The most exotic trip was a ten day visit to Egypt with a cruise on the Nile. My husband and I had an amazing time.

2. SC: Touching the Surface looks like a really awesome book! When did the plot of the book come to your mind?

Kim: So far it seems that the plots of my books come from questions that I need to figure out. About 2 years before I started to write TOUCHING THE SURFACE, my dad passed away. I immediately started writing in order to deal with the loss, but it wasn't until I attended my first SCBWI writer's conference that I got serious and started writing a novel. I think that I had a lot of questions about my dad's death and I explored them through my book. Writing THE END was a very amazing, emotional moment for me.

3. SC: What's Touching the Surface about?

Kim: TOUCHING THE SURFACE is about the idea that life altering events are meant to alter lives. I've always been a bit of a worrier--to the point that it has stopped me from chasing after dreams and having rich experiences. After my dad died, I was forced to deal with the fact that bad things happen to good people and that being "good or safe" wasn't going to insulate me from tragedy. I think I explored this topic in my writing because I was ready to make a change in my own life. I needed to find a way to believe that beautiful things can rise from the ashes. I'm glad I did, because now I'm a believer...my book is dedicated to my dad.

4. SC: In what way is the title of the book related to the content?

Kim: My titles are intricately woven into my books, to the point that I can't even start a book without knowing what the title will be. (It's going to be traumatic the day a publisher wants to change one of mine LOL!) For TOUCHING THE SURFACE, I personally believe that it was important for me to dig deeper within myself. Inside I was a terrified writer trying to find her voice. This translated into a book about people who needed to examine their own lives in a deeper way--even if it hurts them to look at who they really are inside. Some days I really have to force myself not to be paralyzed by the unknown, but writing was helpful for me, I've grown in this area--I'm not so afraid of what lies below my surface.

5. SC: What is your favourite character from your book? Did you use a real person as inspiration when creating this character or any other characters from your book?

Kim:  I love them all--even the ones who seem unlovable. But maybe that's because there are pieces of me in each and every character. If I had to pick one character that I have a particular fondness for, it would be Oliver. I used my son (four years old at the time) as a bit of a model. When I started the book the character of Oliver was 4yo and then my editor suggested that I make him older. The change really resonated with me and aging this character, who I know so well in my life and my story, was an amazing experience. The most fun I've ever had revising. So, I really do have a soft spot for him.

6. SC: What book(s) are you reating at the moment?

Kim: Gahhhh I read anywhere from 4 to 10 books at a time when I combine my audio books, the books I read to my sons and my own reading. Some of my current reads are Level 2, Wednesday Wars, Forge, Tempest and Son.
SC: I know how that is!!! I also read multiple books at a time.

7. SC: If you had to pick 3 books as your favourite, which would they be?

Kim: THE GIVER by Lois Lowry, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green and SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson

8. SC: What book would you like to addapted as a movie?

Kim: Divergent!!!!
SC: Really nice choice!

9. SC: What do you think about Romania? Would you like to visit it one day?

Kim: I love Romania and would absolutely want to visit some day. I remember watching Nadia Comaneci score a perfect 10 at the Olympics. I was six years old and I had a stuffed polar bear that I named after her. (High honors from a 6yo LOL!)
SC: Awww! How sweet! I can imagine a 6year old with a stuffed bear doing that! Wish you luck in visiting Romania and whatever country you'd like to!

10. SC: Send your readers lots of love! Anything you would like to share with them, you can do it now!

Kim: I am so thrilled to be invited to your blog and to connect with some of my future readers. As a debut author, everything is a bit magical about this whole process. I'm trying really hard to remember to stop and enjoy it.  I am so appreciative of anyone who finds their way to my book--I really hope you love it.
